The first collected edition of the poems of Charles Churchill, best known for his satirical long poem 'The Rosciad', was published in 1763 (q.v.), and further editions were published by his executors in 1765, 1766 and 1769. This edition includes some new poems, together with Churchill's ten sermons on the Lord's Prayer in vol. IV. The title-page vignette of a satyr with a mask in vols I--III is signed as drawn and etched by Isaac Taylor; vol. IV has instead the volume subtitle reading: Vol. IV. Containing sermons on the Lord's Prayer. The plate in vol. I is designated the 'frontispiece' to 'The Prophecy of Famine'. An apology for the unfinished dedication in vol. IV p. [xvi] is signed in MS.: 'Jno. Churchill'. There is a two-page list of books printed for Flexney at the end of vol. IV. IV. ESTC t98220.

Copy Notes Interleaved copy with some pencil topographical notes, mostly rubbed out, at the beginning of 'The Rosciad' in volume I. Bought from Thomas Boone for 9s. on 8 July 1807. (Spiers Box). First front free-endpaper in vol. I inscribed in pencil with Boone's price and codes.

Binding C18th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt-ruled spines, red morocco spine-labels.
