First published in 1766 (4th ed., 1767, q.v.). A form of poetical guide book to a popular tourist spot in the eighteenth century, the satirical essays describe the Blunderhead family's visit to Bath, while depicting the manners and customs of the place in a series of humorous letters and poems, most attributed to women visiting the baths. It was a popular work of the period, much imitated and illustrated, running to five editions within a year of first publication and some forty editions in fifty years, and sometimes thought to have influenced Smollett. The present edition, with notes by John Britton, an antiquary and associate of Soane, has plates by George Cruikshank; the additional engraved title-page and the frontispiece entitled 'Mr. Simkin Dressing for the Ball', protected by a tissue-guard, are drawn and engraved by Samuel Williams. Imprint on title-page verso and at end 'J. Moyes' (Soane's printer). Cohn 34.
