Mrs Dorset's earliest poems were first published anonymously in her sister, Charlotte Smith's collection Conversations introducing poetry; ... for the use of young persons, 1804, and reclaimed and added to this volume which was first published in 1807 as 'a Sequel to the Butterfly's Ball. By a Lady', for No. 2 of the Harris's Cabinet series (see Gentleman's Magazine, 1807, ii, pp. 946, 998, 1222) and reissued in 1809 under Dorset's name. 'The favour with which the little poem, intitled 'The Peacock at Home', has been received in its juvenile form, has induced me to republish it, in one more worthy of those who have expressed a desire to see it transplanted from the nursery, to a more honourable station. It is also in compliance with the opinion of others, that I have added notes to the present edition ...' - Preface.
