The first part of Télémaque was translated into English in 1699, the year of its original publication; the earliest French edition in Soane's library was printed in Amsterdam, 1734 (q.v.). Hawkesworth's translation was first published in 1768 and the work remained popular in this and competing translations by Pierre Des Maizeaux (1767 ed., q.v.) and Tobias Smollett until the early 19th century. This edition includes engraved plates by W. Bromley after Thomas Stothard and Edward Francis Burney, dated 1792. ESTC t144015.
