The title to 'Libro Primo' is engraved beneath the dedication to Cardinal Antonio Barberini. The title to 'Libro Secondo' is engraved beneath the dedication to Cardinal Camillo Massimi, who was created a cardinal in 1670, providing the terminus post quem for this book in its usual form. The first edition of the work is usually assumed to have been issued around 1655, at which time it consisted of the first book only, with an earlier state of the title-plate before the addition of 'Libro Primo', and the plates in an unnumbered state. However, some of the plates show signs of reworking and may have been previously issued, and it is thought that de' Rossi bought the plates after Ferrerio's death in 1654, hence the imprint naming him only in his capacity as bookseller (rather than publisher). See BAL, Early printed books, no. 1056. The first appearance of 'Libro Secondo' probably dates to after 1670 but before 1684, when the title-plate was copied by Sandrart for Romae antiquae et novae theatrum published in Nürnberg (q.v.). It is usually stated that for the first printing of the second book the plates were already numbered 1--62, and the title-plate to the first was reworked with the addition of 'Libro Primo', Ferrerio's original plates being evidently at first reprinted without being numbered, on a paper matching the plates of the second book (see Soane copies 1 and 2). However, there is some evidence that the 'Libro Secondo' plates were initially issued without a separate title-plate and without numbering, before or around 1670, and before the revision of some captions; see Hugh Pagan Catalogue 42, p. 22, and BAL, Early printed books, Supplement, no. 1057. After Domenico de' Rossi took over from Giovanni Giacomo in 1691, a new impression was issued with the addition of five new plates in 'Libro Primo', two bearing Domenico's imprint line (pl. 44 'Pianta Del Medesimo Collegio Romano' in book I, and pl. 27 'Vedvta Di Dentro Del Palazzo Del Card.le Alessandrino Hoggi ...' in book II), and the suppression of two plates from the earlier impression (the 'Palazzo de SSri. Caffarelli' by Raphael and the 'Palazzo De SSri. Mattei' by Ammanati). This impression is represented by Soane copies 4 and 5, and by the copy described in BAL, Early printed books, no. 1057. However, the Millard copy appears to represent a late seventeenth-century printing of 'Libro Secondo' with the plate numbers erased; see Millard IV, 37. The collation given above describes the work as usually found prior to 1691. For further details of the five copies at the Soane Museum please see the copy notes; a full bibliographical account, however, remains to be done.
