This is the first edition of Gay's Poems on several occasions, which was published by subscription under the supervision of Alexander Pope to assist the poet financially. The frontispiece and plates to 'The Shepherd's Week' and 'Dione' (pp. 64 and 423) are by the artist and architect William Kent. The volumes have separate title-pages but are paged continuously; a variant exists with p. 482--3 and 486--7 wrongly imposed in reverse order. Pages 104, 242, 377, and 378 are misnumbered 102, 422, 363, 368. Ornamental 'S' printed upside down on p. [119]. Names of subscribers at beginning of vol. I. ESTC t13893; Foxon, p. 295.

Copy Notes Imperfect; lacking pp. 545--546. The plate of 'The Shepherd's Week' is crudely hand-coloured. Probably the copy purchased by Soane at Lord Lyttelton's sale, 1-6 July 1823 (q.v.), fourth day, lot 83, hammer price £1 3s. together in the same lot with copies of Mason's Supplement to Johnson's English dictionary, 1801 (q.v.) and Newton's The chronology of ancient kingdoms amended, 1728 (q.v.).

Binding C18th calf, gilt-tooled spine compartments, red morocco spine-label. Bound in one volume.
