AYSCOUGH, Samuel (1745--1804)
A general index to the first fifty-six volumes of the Gentleman's Magazine, from its commencement in the year 1731, to the end of 1786. Compiled by Samuel Ayscough, clerk, ... In two volumes. ...
London (Place), printed by John Nichols; for D. Henry: and sold by E. Newbery,, 1789.
2 vols ; 20.5 cm. (8°)
I: iv, 494, [2] p.
II: [2], 386 p.

The index is divided into five parts: the first volume contains the index to the essays, dissertations, and historical passages, and the second the indexes to the poetry, names of persons, plates, and books and pamphlets. Only about half the plates are in fact listed, no doubt because many were removed by the original owners of early sets of the Gentleman's Magazine (q.v.), which began publication in 1731 and immediately became the most popular and enduring journal of the eighteenth century: see William B. Todd, 'A bibliographical account of "The Gentleman's Magazine", 1731-1754', Studies in Bibliography 18 (1965), pp. 81--109. Publisher's advertisements on final three pages of vol. I and final page of vol. II. ESTC t163679.

Copy Notes Rear free-endpaper in vol. II inscribed in ink Vol. 41. 377 [March 1771] referring to the announcement of the marriage on 28 July 1771 of 'Charles Greentree Esq; of Hillingdon,--to Miss Eliz. Soane, of Hanwell'.

Binding Late C18th-century tree calf, gilt Greek-key and dotted borders, gilt-tooled spine compartments with oval paterae, red and black morocco spine-labels. Bound uniformly or to match the set of the Gentleman's Magazine, 1731--1825 (q.v.).
