First edition published by Antoine de Sommeville and Augustin Courbé in 1645; the present edition includes a later state of the additional title-plate with traces of the previous, erased imprint still partially visible in this copy. Pages 497 and 632 misnumbered 489 and 932 respectively and the pagination repeats pp. 271-2 and omits 471-80; text and register are continuous. Leaves N1 (pp. 97-8), Z1 (pp. 177-8), 3H3 (pp. 427-8), and 4D1 (pp. 585-6) at the end of books I, II, VI, and VIII. The title-page is printed in red and black, with an engraved vignette with motto 'Resvrgo Cvrvata'.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the blank leaves N1, Z1, 3H3, and 4D1. Bought at the sale of the late architect and antiquary James Cavanah Murphy (1716--1814) for 1 guinea on 18 December 1814 with other books and prints to the value of £27, paid by draft dated 19 December. (Spiers Box, Miscellaneous booksellers). Front pastedown inscribed in pencil Mr Murphy No7 Edward Street. A scrap of waste paper with notes concerning encaustic paintings in interior decoration has been used as a bookmarker between pages 18 and 19, but is not in Soane's hand. Also in an unidentified hand is a MS. index of topics in pencil on the rear free-endpaper: Female organ of Generation p 139-141 / Labyrinth 162 / Cielings of the Rooms of the Labyrinth 162 / Columns like Palm Trees 171 / ... / Lotus fruit p 135 / Dried fish p 138 / Cubit, formed by the Phœnicians upon the horn of a beast p 316.

Binding C17th sprinkled calf with blind-tooled inlaid inner panel in later calf [to cover earlier armorial stamp?], gilt-tooled spine compartments.
