At foot of imprint: Sous le privilège de l'Académie des sciences & de la Société royale de médecine. Printer's imprint of Chardon at foot of p. 653. This is the second edition of 1789, in two volumes, with the addition of pp. [559]--653, containing 'Tables A L'Usage Des Chimistes', an index, thirty-four pages of laudatory text and two pages of errata; the 'nouvelle édition' of the same year is in fact the third edition, and the 'seconde édition' of 1793, the fourth. The plates are engraved by the scientist's wife, Marie Paulze Lavoisier, a pupil of David; with wood-engraved title-page vignette and head- and tailpieces by Papillon. Lavoisier is considered the founder of modern scientific chemistry for his use of accurate measurements and his reform of chemical nomenclature.
Copy Notes In this copy the '3' of p. 413 has printed above the line. Bought from Thomas Boone for 6s., 9 June 1804. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.1.4). With Boone's price 2 toms -s6- / avec figs. and cyphers in pencil on first front free-endpaper, and an inventory number (?) 1677 in ink on both front pastedowns.
Binding C19th polished calf, gilt-tooled spines with rose ornament, black and red morocco spine-labels.
