First published in 1671; according to Wing this is the second edition. Apparently inspired by a comment by Milton's Quaker friend Thomas Ellwood on Paradise Lost (first edition 1667, q.v.), the poem treats of the temptations of Jesus in the desert. 'Samson Agonistes' has special title-page but pagination and signatures are continuous. With a preliminary license to print and two final advertisement leaves. Copy Notes The Soane copy is without the two final advertisement leaves recorded in ESTC and in the above collation. Inscribed in pencil at the base of the rear free-endpaper, in a C19th hand 9th Novr. 26 6 Books / Barlace confirmed by a receipt for the purchase on that date of 6 books for £5 5s. from A.W. Barlace (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.6.10).

Binding C19th calf, blind roll-tooled palmette and anthemion borders within triple blind fillets, blind-tooled spine compartments, blind-tooled false bands, gilt-tooled spine title. Uniform with the copy of Poems, &c. upon several occasions, 1673 (q.v.).
