Large paper copy. Malcolm was stationed at Mysore at the time he wrote his 'History', and was given a governmental allowance. He led one of the first British diplomatic missions to the Qajar court of Persia and was intimately linked with the early development of Anglo-Persian diplomatic relations visiting Persia three times in all. He travelled to most of the provinces and dispatched his officers to various parts of the country to observe and report. The plates include views, buildings, ruins and portraits, engraved by C. Heath after W. Sundt and others including Persian originals. (see Heath, J. Heath family engravers 1779-1878, II, pp. 130-133). The map in vol. I is by M. Thomson after A. Arrowsmith. NSTC M798.
Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the half-title in each volume. Pencil price on verso of front free-endpaper in both volumes: 0/14/0.
Binding C19th diced calf, thin gilt roll-tooled borders, gilt-ruled spines, black morocco spine-labels, marbled endpapers. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for £1 8s. in May 1829, the exact date obscured by attached receipt dated 24 June 1829. (Priv.Corr. XVI.E.6.29).
