Originally intended to be published in three volumes according to an undated advertisement probably printed shortly before the author's death in November 1826 (q.v.). Extensive corrigenda on the versos of the half-titles in each volume. Volumes III and IV are described on the verso of the half-title as 'The Third Volume Part I.' and '... Part II.', and volume IV is also referred to as 'being part of vol. III', the division having been made for convenience in binding. Page 594 in vol. IV misnumbered 524. The 'List of Illustrative Portraits and Views' at the end of vol. IV indicates that these were available for purchase separately, no doubt for the benefit of grangerisers, 'Price 21s.', the seventh plate (at vol. III p. 1049) in the fourth volume is not listed amongst these. The plates are protected by tissue-guards. Soane appears in the 'List Of Purchasers As Far As Known To The Publisher' (vol. I, p. xxiv).

Binding C19th diced calf, thin gilt roll-tooled borders, gilt-ruled spines, black morocco spine-labels. Bound by Edwin Hutchonson for £1 2s., 8 July 1829. (Archives 7/10/21).
