First published anonymously in 1771 (with the dedication dated 1770). Thomas Percy was the editor of the influential anthology of ballads and songs Reliques of ancient English poetry, 1765 (3rd ed. 1775, q.v.). The This original work was dedicated to Percy's patron the Duchess of Northumberland.
