The collected works of Pope were first published by William Warburton, to whom the poet had left the copyright of his printed works, in 1751 (q.v.). Warburton's edition was felt by many to be marred by 'many forced and far-sought interpretations' ('Advertisement' to vol. I, p. [v]), leading Warton to bring out a new edition incorporating commentary from his own equally controversial Essay on the writings and genius of Pope (1756, q.v.; vol. II, 1782). A supplement, containing letters and previously unpublished works, was published in 1807 as vol. X, but not acquired by Soane, who made numerous references to Pope's works in his lectures, particularly the Essay on Man and the Moral Essays. Of the two portraits of Pope in vol. I, one is bound as the frontispiece to vol. I, the other printed in sepia is at full length drawn by William Hoare. Contents: vol. I. The life, and miscellaneous works -- vol. II. Poetry. -- vol. III. Essays. -- vol. IV--VI. Prose works. -- vol. VII--IX. Correspondence. ESTC t5463.
