First edition: 1614. Part I only bringing the history of the world down to the second Macedonian was (146 B.C.), of a projected work in three parts. With an additional engraved allegorical title-plate by R. Elstracke dated 1666. Other issues have the imprint reading 'to be sold by John Place ...' and '... Thomas Rookes', and in some copies the engraved title is dated 1665. The Soane copy as described includes 'The Life Of Sir Walter Raleigh', 36 p. (sig. B-D4) inserted after the preface. The 'Life' is not recorded in the ESTC records of any of the three 1666 issues, but is found in the Bodleian copy of the Rookes issue (ESTC r182348, shelfmark Vet. A3 c.126) and like the Soane copy lacks a separate title-page. The text is that of The life of the valiant & learned Sir VValter Raleigh, Knight by John Shirley of which a separate octavo edition was published in 1677; it was also issued as part of the 1677 and 1687 folio editions of The history of the world, having in the latter a separate dated title-page naming it as the third edition, with the imprint of George Dawes and Richard Tonson. The portrait of Raleigh is by Simon van de Passe after C. Holland. Numerous errors in pagination: pages 668, 974--975, 1024, and 1094--1095 misnumbered 686, 994--995, 1026, and 1084--1085.
