With the printer's imprint of J. Moyes. Wiffen's translation of Gerusalemme liberata was originally published in two volumes in 1824 having been preceded by his issue of a translation of the fourth book of the epic ' ... Being the specimen of an intended new translation in English Spenserian verse; with a prefatory dissertation on existing translations' in 1821. A facsimile of Tasso's hand-writing appears on p. [cxlv]. The 'List of such of the English Nobility and Gentry as went on the Crusades' (pp. [cxlvii]--clv) is gathered from extensive MSS. and printed sources.
Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the engraved portrait of the author in vol. I (present in, e.g., the BL copy of this edition, 11426.g.4) and lacking vol. III half-title. On a fly-leaf of heavy paper at front of vol. I: For / John Soane, Esq. / With Mr. Moyes's most / respectful compliments / February 28, 1826.
Binding C19th calf, gilt-ruled borders, gilt-tooled spine incorporating roses and lilies, [faded] red morocco spine-labels. Bound by Hood & McCullock for 10s. 6d., 22 March 1826. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.6.6).
