The title-page is engraved. The nine 'Nights' written in response to the loss of the poet's stepdaughter, wife and son-in-law, were first published serially in quarto in 1742 and were instantly popular, with over a hundred collected editions published in the next half century, including an edition in 1797 with illustrations by William Blake, a rare fully hand-coloured copy of which is also in Soane's library (q.v.). This edition has an engraved frontispiece and title vignette of the Grim Reaper by Page. Includes at the end 'A Paraphrase On Part of the Book of Job', a glossary, and an index.
