First collected edition of Young's works by his copyright holders issued before the publication of his celebrated Night thoughts revived his literary career in 1742 (1777 ed., q.v.). The text and register are continuous in spite of a hiatus in the pagination; in vol. II, pp. 200--1 are misnumbered 300--1. See Ralph Straus, The unspeakable Curll: being some account of Edmund Curll, bookseller; to which is added a full list of his books (Chapman and Hall, 1927; reprinted New York, 1970), p. 309 (Jan. 17, 1741). Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the three plates in vol. I. Two volumes bound in one. This is probably the copy of 'Young's Plays & poems' bought from Thomas Boone for 2s., 9 June 1804. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.1.4). Boone's pencilled annotations and hieroglyphs on flyleaf 2 Vols in one / Plays & poems / =s2= / Ed. Young Author of Night / Thoughts. Some bracketings in ink for emphasis throughout the text.

Binding C18th calf, gilt double-ruled borders and spine, later red morocco spine-label.
