First edition; three further editions appeared between 1714 and 1722. Generally assumed to have been edited by Alexander Pope, this collection includes the first appearance in print of Pope's 'The Rape of the Locke', in two cantos only. This, and Thomas Betterton's 'Chaucer's Characters' have special title-pages. The text is continous despite the pagination, but Y and Z are omitted in the signatures. The frontispiece is engraved by Elisha Kirkall. Includes an eight-page catalogue of 'Books Printed for Bernard Lintott' at the end. ESTC t5777; Rothschild 1565; Griffith 6.

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink with library shelfmarks R2 on front pastedown, and T-1 on front free-endpaper.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt double-ruled borders with gilt-tooled thistle corner ornaments, gilt-tooled spine compartments.
