Anonymous. By Samuel Butler, named as the author on the portrait plate. Originally published in 1663--64 in two parts; the third was added in 1678. An Irish reprint of the first edition by the Puritan scholar Zachary Grey, published in the same year in Cambridge with a forty-two page list of subscribers, a portrait of the author after G. Soest by George Vertue, and sixteen plates re-engraved by James Mynde from Hogarth's smaller set of 1726. Grey's Hudibras, illustrated with extensive quotations from contemporary authors, is the basis of all subsequent editions of Butler's work along with his additional volume of Critical, historical and explanatory notes published in 1752. Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting pl. III in vol. I. Bought from Mr. Floyer for £7 (with other books) on 11 August 1797. (Jnl 3, p.233). The second front free-endpaper of vol. I is inscribed in ink John Soane.

Binding Late C18th tree calf, gilt-tooled and lettered spine.
