Anonymous. The frontispiece is captioned 'Marmora et adfines Aliquos Lapides coloribus suis' and some of the plates are signed 'A.L. Wirsing exc. Nor.', suggesting a translation from Adam Ludwig Wirsing, Marmora et adfines aliquos lapides coloribus suis exprimi, Nürnberg 1775. (See J. Landwehr, Studies in Dutch books with coloured plates published 1662-1875, The Hague 1976, cat. no. 1, p. 1.) With parallel title-pages and prefaces in Dutch, German, English, French and Latin, the English title reading: A representation of different sort [sic] of marble, ingraved and set out in their natural colours; also set forth with the Dutch, German, English, French and Latin names. The hand-coloured plates are interleaved with polyglot tables identifying the wood types. The plates are numbered as follows: I--XIII, I--XII, I--V, I--VI, I--VI, I--VII, I--III, I--II, I--VI, 61--66.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the frontispiece. Bound (2) with a corresponding volume on wood, Afbeelding van in- en outlandsche houten, Amsterdam 1773 (q.v.). Bought on Soane's behalf by Joseph Gandy from Margaret Butler on 7 January 1822, for 5 guineas. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.4.9).

Binding Early C19th diced russia, gilt-rule borders and spine, direct-lettered in gilt 'A/ Representation/ Of Wood/ & Stones'.
