AGLIO, Agostino (1777--1857)
[Antiquities of Mexico. Prospectus. 1830?]
Antiquities of Mexico; comprising fac-similes of ancient Mexican paintings and hieroglyphics, ... together with the monuments of New Spain by M. Dupaix, ... The whole illustrated by many valuable inedited manuscripts: by Augustine Aglio. Prospectus.
[London]: Printed by Richard Taylor, Red Lion Court, Fleet-Street, [1830?].
3, [1] p.; 24.8 cm. (4º)

Half-sheet, folded, verso of conjugate leaf blank. Drop-head title. Watermark date: 1830. Since the description of the contents of volumes I--III is detailed and that of volumes IV--VII less so, it is probable that this prospectus appeared after the completion of volume iii but before the appearance of volume iv. Viscount Kingsborough's tireless editorship and financial promotion of this monumental work, which cost him in the end not only his entire fortune but also his life, is barely acknowledged by Aglio. At this stage the work was to consist of seven volumes, 'imperial folio, price £120; and coloured, £175'; it was completed eventually in nine volumes in 1848, the ninth volume including sixty pages of a projected tenth. Hooked on Books 4.2.

Binding Loose sheet.
