A Paris (Place), pour Jaques Androuet, du Cerceau,, 1582.
26 leaves, XXXVIII [i.e. 51] pl. (= 64 coppers) ; 39.1 cm. (2°)
This is the second edition of Du Cerceau's so-called 'third' Livre d'architecture, which was first published in 1572. This copy includes thirteen bis plates as follows: II, III, IIII, IX, X, XIII, XIX, XXVII, XXXIII, XXXIIIII, XXXVI, XXXVIII. Plates XIIII bis, XVII, XVIII, XXIIII and XXV each bear impressions of two distinct coppers; and plates II bis, XIX bis, XXXIII and XXXIII bis each bear three such impressions. The original pl. XXIX, present in some copies of this edition, is absent in this copy, its place being taken by an unnumbered plate showing the ground-plan and section of the interior circular court of the château featured in the bird's-eye perspective on pl. XX. A copy of the 1615 edition in the British Architectural Library has a bis plate numbered XX which is not present in this copy of the earlier edition, possibly because it duplicates the above-mentioned unnumbered plate (see BAL, Early printed books, no. 97).
Copy Notes Bought from T. & W. Boone for 8s. on 22 March 1823. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.5.6). Inscribed in ink on title-page R P. Possible bookseller's ciphers in pencil, on front pastedown -/o/- and on rear pastedown ^/-. Three plans drawn in ink by an unidentified French hand, remounted on new paper by Margaret Schulein 31 July 1986 (see Soane Museum, Concise Catalogue of Drawings: Volumes, French School, 4).
