The author is the artist-topographer James Baker, who published A picturesque guide to the local beauties of Wales in 1791 and The imperial guide in 1802. Page [v] of The imperial guide contains a publication notice for 'Number IV. Of The Imperial Guide; Completing Volume I. ...' followed by a note about the delay until the following year of a 'Fifth or Supplementary Number' which 'in addition to those subjects before promised in the Prospectus, ... will be a Guide to many fashionable Summer Resorts upon the different Sea Coasts not yet published; and ... improved Picturesque Plans of ... the Borders of the River Thames, ...'. Possibly the present work is all that was published of the supplementary number. The Soanes may have acquired this work in connection with their holiday visits to Margate (especially Mrs Soane); see Susan Palmer, The Soanes at home: domestic life at Lincoln's Inn Fields (1997), pp. 73--76. It consists of 10 pp. with drop-head title 'Maritime Guide From London To Margate, Ramsgate, &c.' followed by 46 pp. (signed B--D8) of 'Appendix' with sections on Rochester, Chatham, Canterbury, Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate, and neighbouring country houses, with unnumbered plates are as follows: uncaptioned pictorial map of the Thames signed J.
