The first part, dated 'An XI -- 1803' is devoted to the Louvre and, apart from the engraved dedication and divisional title-plate ('Explication Des Planches Du Louvre'), contains 40 plates numbered 1--32, with seven bis plates (7, 8, 9, 16, 16 ter, 16 quart., 27) and one unnumbered final plate. Of the three succeeding parts, which are devoted to the châteaux d'Ecouen, Saint-Cloud, and Fontainebleau respectively, only part [2] is preceded by a half-title and separate title-page. This reads as above with the name of the author of the historical descriptions given as 'M. Amaury-Duval' instead of 'le cit. Amaury-Duval', and the imprint 'An XIII -- 1805'. Part [4] has [20] coppers on 17 leaves numbered [1], [3], 3 [bis], 4, 4 bis, 5, 10--14, 14 bis, 15--17, 17 bis. 1--17. One of the two British Library copies (559*.h.22) has pl. [2] with 2 coppers which is lacking in the Soane copy, but lacks pl. 17 in the Soane copy; plates 6--9 are lacking in both copies. The other BL copy, like BAL 180, does not have the final, incomplete section on Fontainbleau at all. BAL Early printed books, no. 180.

Copy Notes This copy has the printed upper wrappers of the 22nd and 25th 'livraison' laid down on the rear free-endpaper and paste-down; the former is inscribed in ink a Rendre / pour Son Excellence / Le Ministre de L'interieur / Montesquiou / 22. 23. 24me Lou / qui attend La suite / Tessier Rélieur; and the latter has a printed slip pasted to it containing an 'Avis' announcing the recommencement of the work (described as 'long-temps suspendu'), a forthcoming 'nouveau Prospectus' detailing proposed improvements in its plan and execution, and a promise of 'les trois Livraisons destinées à compléter la Description de Fontainebleau ...'. The first three numbers were bought for £6 16s. 6d. from Boydell & Co., 4 November 1815. (Spiers Box, books purchased from Boydell). Number four (consisting of livraisons 22, 23, 24, 25) was bought by E. Conduitt for Soane from J. Salmon in Paris on 9 September 1819 for 50 francs. (Priv. Corr. XIV.B.4.2). Soane visited Paris with William Pilkington, Mr and Mrs Conduitt and Henry Parke from 21 August to 23 September 1819.
