BARTOLI, Pietro Santi (1635--1700)
[Gli antichi sepolcri. 1768]
Gli antichi sepolcri, ovvero mausolei Romani, ed Etruschi trovati in Roma, ed in altri luoghi celebri; nelle quali si contengono molte erudite memorie: raccolti, disegnati, ed intagliati da Pietro Santi Bartoli, ...
In Roma 1768.
[14] p., 110 [i.e. 114] pl. (bis pl. 1, 4 and 72; ter pl. 72) ; 36.5 cm. (2°)

The first edition had appeared in 1697, and a second, slightly enlarged edition in 1699. Soane's use of 'star-fish' ceilings, beginning with his Breakfast Room at 12 Lincoln's Inn Fields built in 1792, seems to have been inspired by Bartoli's plates of the ceilings of Etruscan tombs. See Peter Thornton and Helen Dorey, A miscellany of objects from Sir John Soane's Museum (London 1992), p. 92. BAL, Early printed books, no. 210.

Inscribed in pencil on front pastedown 110 Plates =10s=6d and with a cypher on the rear pastedown, probably in the hand of the bookseller Thomas Boone. With a small scrap of paper with late C18th/early C19 English writing on the verso and a pencil note Tivole & Sphinx on the recto tipped in at pl. 101.

Binding C18th Italian block-printed decorated-paper cartonnage boards with small red floral motif, white paper spine inscribed in ink with the author, title and date.
