First published in 1782. The author 'Mr. B****' has not been identified. The wood-engraver 'Gritner' lived in Toulouse and worked for booksellers in Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Avignon, Toulouse and Nímes between 1763 and 1802 (see Inventaire du fonds français, XVIIIe siècle, tom. 11, pp. 37-49). The woodcut of an inscription 'C. Caesari Avgvsti ...', here printed at the foot of pl. [2] 'Vue De La Maison Quarrée', is sometimes found cut and bound as a separate eighth plate (compare the two British Library copies, 576.g.31 and 665.c.11).

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting one plate. With passages from J.J. Rousseau inscribed in ink in a small neat hand on pp. 22 and 41--43. Bound (2) with an extra-illustrated copy of Cochin and Bellicard's Observations upon the antiquities of the town of Herculaneum, 1753 (q.v.), with the plates to both texts bound at the end of the volume. Bought from T.&W. Boone for 7s., 14 July 1822. (Priv. Corr.XVI.E.4:6).

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-tooled spine with a Greek key medallion motif, green morocco spine-label gilt-lettered 'Herculaneum/ &/ Nismes'.
