Beloe was a writer and translator of the classics who became keeper of printed books at the British Museum in 1803, and was dismissed for negligence after the theft of engravings by the printseller James Deighton. (See Farington, Diary, VIII, pp. 2809 and 2820.) The final leaf is blank. ESTC t100215; NCBEL III:1637.
Copy Notes Bought from Thomas Boone for 2s. 6d. on 8 July 1807. (Spiers Box). Inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper by the Translator / of Herodotus, with Boone's price and codes. Beloe's translation of Herodotus was published in 1791 (2nd ed., 1805, q.v.).
Binding Late C18th polished tree-calf, gilt-tooled spine with thick fillets and sunbursts, red morocco spine-label.
