Belzoni, Giovanni Battista (1778--1823) - Collections
Plates illustrative of the researches and operations of G. Belzoni in Egypt and Nubia.
London (Place), John Murray,, 1820.
44 litho. pl. [on 14 leaves] ; 50.5 cm. (2°)

Published simultaneously to accompany Belzoni's Narrative of the operations and recent discoveries ... in Egypt and Nubia (q.v.). The plates were drawn by Belzoni and J. Ricci, presumably a relation of Dr. Alessandro Ricci, Belzoni's companion in Egypt. The frontispiece portrait of Belzoni in the Narrative, drawn on stone by M. Gauci, and the 21 plates (on 14 leaves) lithographed by Charles Hullmandel in the present volume of plates are not only some of the earliest lithographic illustrations to be published, but also 'assured the success of lithography in England' and 'had the effect of recommending the new process to artists'. See Michael Twyman, Lithography 1800--1850, 1970, pp. 188--89; Twyman also suggests that Belzoni may have been influenced by Le Comte de Forbin's use of the medium to illustrate his Voyage dans le Levant, 1819; ibid., pp.228--29). Sixteen of the twenty lithographs, and the fourteen engraved plates, are hand-coloured, most of latter being etched views by Agostino Aglio (1777--1857), who had come to England in 1803 to work on William Wilkins's Antiquities of Magna Graecia, 1807 (q.v.). All the surviving drawings of the tomb of Seti I by Belzoni and his assistants are in the Archaeological Department of the City of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. A second issue of the Plates with reset title-page appeared in 1821 (see BAL, Early printed books, no. 247). Abbey, Travel, 268 (vol. I, pp. 241--2.)

Copy Notes In this copy pl. 40 is present in coloured and plain states. Pasted to the front free-endpaper is an undated Prospectus for publishing a complete series of lithographic engravings from the original model of the Egyptian Tomb, now in the possession of Mrs. Belzoni (q.v.). No such work is known to have been published. Bound, probably as issued, with a copy of Six new plates illustrative of the researches and operations of G.Belzoni in Egypt and Nubia, 1822 (q.v.).

Binding C19th half dark blue morocco-grain cloth, original grey paper boards, upper cover with printed paper label reading '£6. 6s. Plates Illustrative Of The Researches And Operations Of G. Belzoni In Egypt And Nubia.' in a Greek key border.
