2 parts [ex 6] in 1 vol. ; 31.5 cm. (2°)

VI: [8], 47, [1] p., 146 pl. : engr. t.-p.

Two parts only of a four-volume (?), six-part work, sometimes referred to as Romanæ urbis topographia after the title of the first part. One of the most important works of Renaissance antiquarianism published outside Italy, it was originally published in six separate parts by the engraver-bookseller Theodor de Bry and his heirs at Frankfurt in 1597 (Parts 1--3), 1598 (part 3 = 'II. Tomus'), 1600 (Part 5 = 'III. Tomus') and 1602 (Part 6 = 'IIII. Tomus'). The volume in the Soane Museum, described above, contains parts 5 and 6 only; the engraved title-plates to each part are headed 'V. Pars' and 'VI. Pars' respectively. ICCU (Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico) records a bis pl. 1 in Part 5, not present in the Soane copy.

Copy Notes Imperfect; Part 5 wanting bis pl. 1, Part 6 wanting pl. 145--146. With pl. 37--144 of Part 6 misbound between pl. 44 and 45 of Part 5. With an earlier provenance inscription in ink on the title-page to Part 5 crossed out. The offset of an ink price inscription 1.11.6 can be read on the front paste-down.

Binding C17th English sprinkled calf, blind double-rule borders and spine, gilt-stamped arms of John Thompson (fl. 1613--1630) on upper and lower covers. Upper cover inscribed top left in ink '2'.
