The work consists of an engraved pictorial title-plate, engraved dedication to Pope Clement XI, engraved preface 'Al Lettore' and list of plates, an engraved portrait of Borromini counted in the list of plates as pl. I, and plates numbered II--XLV, [XLVI--XLVII]. The last two unnumbered plates, clearly intended to be joined as in Soane copy 1, are counted in the list of contents as pl. XLVI. Although Soane described Borromini's works in his Lecture VIII as 'mighty mazes of chaotic confusion' , he purchased two copies of his book. BAL, Early printed books, no. 326; Millard IV, 22.

Copy Notes Copy 1: With plates [XLVI--XLVII] joined together and the engraved list of plates bound after the preface. Inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper 2..18s. This is probably the copy purchased from T. & W. Boone for £1 in January 1829. (Spiers Box).
Copy 2: 56.0 cm. With plates [XLVI--XLVII] separate and engraved list of plates bound at the end. Inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper in the bookseller Thomas Boone's hand 46 Elegant Plates & Portrait of / the Author / 1£=4s=0d and Boone's price code xkf, and in ink with earlier library shelfmark B.5.11. This is probably the copy purchased from Thomas Boone for £1 1s. on 29 December 1815. (Spiers Box).

Binding Copy 1: C18th vellum, red morocco spine-label, marbled-paper pasetdowns.
Copy 2: C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-tooled and triple-ruled borders, gilt-tooled spine.
