PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista ( 1720--1778)
Camere sepolcrali degli antichi Romani le quali esistono dentro e fuori di Roma
[Roma]:, [Giovanni Bouchard],, [1753 or 4].
Etch. t.-pl., [11] double-page etch. pl. ; 52 cm. (1°)

The title is taken from the etched title-plate. Issued here as part of a complete set of Piranesi's works assembled in 1753 or 4 under the collective title of Le magnificenze di Roma (q.v.), this series of etchings depicting ancient Roman household burial chambers dates from about 1750-1 and is the earliest of Piranesi's purely archaeological publications. It includes reprints of five plates from Francesco Bianchini's Camera ed inscrizioni sepulcrali de' liberti, servi, ed ufficiali della Casa di Augusto scoperte nella Via Appia, Rome 1727 (q.v.), the original copperplates and unsold stock of which Piranesi had managed to track down and purchase by the late 1740s (see Andrew Robison, Piranesi: early architectural fantasies, Washington DC: National Gallery of Art, 1986, p. 55 n. 38; also Jonathan Scott, Piranesi, London: Academy Editions, 1975, p. 108). The rarity of Piranesi's Camere sepolcrali (the Soane copy was the only example known to Hind) is almost certainly due to the fact that the entire series was only a few years later absorbed into vols II and III of Le antichità Romane, 1756 (q.v.) - see Hind, Piranesi, pp. 81--82 for details.

Copy Notes Bound (4) in vol. II of a two-volume set of Piranesi's works issued under the collective title of Le magnificenze di Roma (q.v.). With manuscript pagination 101--145 top right in ink (versos are un-numbered but included in the count).

Binding C18th calf, triple gilt-ruled borders, gilt-tooled spines, black morocco spine-labels, gilt-lettered 'Opera De Piranesi / II'.

Reference Number 6456

Additional Names Bianchini, Francesco (1662--1729)
