[8], 72, [16], 23, [5] p., engr. frontis. : [1] full-page engr. dedic. ; 17.2 cm. (8º)

The main text (pp. [1]--72), headed 'Avertissement av Lecteur ...', is cast in the form of a series of 'conferences' between 'Ariste' (the patron), a painter, his pupil and (from p. 48) Bosse himself. This work has three justificatory pieces appended which do not appear in the same order in all copies. In this copy 'A Bosse Av Lecteur, ...' ([16] p., signed and dated at the end 'Par Bosse en Mars 1666. L.S.D.'), is placed before the main text, while 'Lettres Écrites Au Sr Bosse, Gravevr, Avec Ses Réponses ... (pp.[1]--23, [1], with Bosse's imprint at the end dated 'Avec Privilege 1668') and 'Discovrs Tendant A desabuser ...' ([4] p., signed and dated at the end 'Par Bosse en Decembre 1667.') follow the 'Extrait du Privilege du Roy'. For a catalogue description of Bosse's engravings in this work see André Blum, L'oeuvre gravé d'Abraham Bosse, 1924, no. 858--859.

Copy Notes The Soane copy is bound in a somewhat disorganised sammelband with Bosse's Moyen universel de pratiquer la perspectiue (1653, q.v.) and Traité des pratiques geometrales (1665,q.v.). The title-page and frontispiece of Le peintre converty are here misbound at the end of the main text, and the dedication 'Aux Cvrieux' is misplaced at the head of the volume, preceding the dedication to Nicolas de Croismare from the Traité des pratiques geometrales and the main text of the Moyen universel. The volume is inscribed in ink on front free endpaper John Soane / 1809 and in pencil probably in the hand of the bookseller Thomas Boone rare =3s. These inscriptions suggest that this volume may be the 'Du Bos. Perspective &c.' purchased by Soane from Boone on 12 December 1809, as no work on perspective by Du Bos or Dubos has been traced. (Spiers Box). The dedication is inscribed in ink A. Bosse and in pencil Numerous Plates &c. -3s . The title-page is inscribed in pencil with Perspective &c -3s 76 Plates.

Binding C18th sprinkled sheep, gilt-tooled spine, maroon spine-label gilt-lettered 'L Art De L Archit'.
