A Paris chez Pierre Aubouin, Pierre Emery et Charles Clousier, [ca. 1700].
Engr. t.-pl., engr. frontis., add. engr. t.-pl., XLIV pl. ; 38.8 cm. (2°)

This work was first issued in 1664 'chez l'Auteur' with a dedication to Colbert dated 'Avec Priuilege pour vingt Années. 1665' (see Fowler 57, copy A). The additional engraved title-plate features an Ionic portico enshrining a female statue enthroned on a pedestal reading 'La Raison Svr Tovt', flanked by niches containing 'Le Solide' and 'La [A]greable', and approached between 'La Theorie' and 'La Pratique' up steps inscribed 'Le Commode'. In the attic and frieze of the portico is written 'Traité Svr La Pratiqve Des Ordres De Colomnes De L'Architectvre Nommée Antiqve. Par A. Bosse'. In its present state this plate has had Bosse's original imprint line trimmed from the foot. The Soane copy matches copy C in the Fowler catalogue (i.e. Fowler 59) in that it includes the so-called 'Jombert' frontispiece. This features the coat-of-arms and monogram of François Louis de Bourbon, Prince de Conti, and was borrowed from the posthumous third edition of Antoine Le Pautre's Oeuvres d'architecture first published by Jean I Jombert between c. 1697 and c. 1700. In its present state this plate is numbered '2' top right and '1' bottom left (it was originally unnumbered) and bears an imprint line reading 'Se vend à Paris Sur le quay des Augustins chez Iombert à l'Image N. Dame', a form used by the Jombert firm until c. 1713. (For a later state of this plate with the Jombert 'Rue St Jacques' address, see Fowler 59, notes).

The Soane copy differs from Fowler copy C however in that Bosse's original dedication to Colbert dated 1665, which had been suppressed in issues published in 1684 and 1688 (i.e. shortly after his death in 1683) is not present. This suggests that it represents an issue dating from after Jombert acquired Bosse's plates (i.e. post 1688) but before the sheets he took over from Aubouin, Emery and Clousier were exhausted (cf. the later undated edition described below issued by Jean I's successor, Claude Jombert, between ca. 1722 and 1735). For an earlier issue dating to c. 1688, see BAL, Early printed books, no. 341; a later issue in the Soane Museum dates probably to the 1720s (q.v.). See also Millard I, pp. 78-83.

Copy Notes Bound, probably as issued (though the works were also available independently), with Bosses' Des ordres de colones (q.v.) and Représentations géométrales (q.v.). Inscribed in ink and pencil on front free-endpaper ulc / 36 / 1-1-0, and with arithmetical sums in ink on the front paste-down.

Binding C17th sprinkled calf, blind roll-tooled borders, gilt-tooled spine, red morocco spine-label.

Reference Number 1746
