Plates irregularly numbered 1--33; of the seven double-page plates five are assigned two numbers each, and pl. [30] is unnumbered and bears two impressions. With the plates printed in bistre. Matthew Brettingham senior (1699--1769) had overseen the building of Holkham since 1734 to the neo-Palladian designs of William Kent, assisted by Lord Burlington, and a book was planned by Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester at the time of his death in 1759. The present volume contains plans, elevations and sections but omits all reference to the involvement of Kent and Burlington; the designs of ceilings and chimney-pieces were not published until 1773 (q.v.) by Matthew Brettingham junior (1725--1803). The work as published in 1761 exists in two editions. In the present edition, the author's name on the title-page is in larger type, 'Earl' is in large and small caps, and the penultimate line of the preface has 'engraven'; another edition (q.v.) has the author's name in smaller caps, 'Earl' in upper- and lower-case, and the preface has 'engraved'. Copy Notes Neatly inscribed in ink after imprint Price L3.3.0,. Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper From the Author to John Soane, the 'e' added after 1783. Presented to Soane before Brettingham senior's death in 1769, this may have been one of the first architectural books in Soane's possession. See Eileen Harris, 'Sir John Soane's library: "O, Books!
