According to Britton, the Marquis of Stafford was the first nobleman in London to open his picture gallery to the public, which he did in May 1806. John Young, Keeper of the British Institution, also prepared a catalogue of the Cleveland House collection in 1825. Marquis of Stafford (1758--1833), who proceeded to invest much more in its completion. The name was changed to Stafford House. In 1833, the Marquis of Stafford was created first Duke of Sutherland, then died later in the year. The final page advertises other books by Britton; some copies also have an additional unnumbered final leaf advertising vol. I of The architectural antiquities of Great Britain, 1807--26 (q.v.).

Binding Copy 1: C19th polished calf, gilt roll-tool borders, gilt-ruled spine, maroon spine-label. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 3s. 6d., 5 December 1827. (Archive 7/10/17, book binding.) Matching the binding of the copy of Britton's A brief memoir, 1825 (q.v.), that Britton presented to Soane in October 1825.
