Large paper copy. For this celebration of the artistic achievements of the past century Britton contributed a memoir of the painter Richard Wilson and short essays on paintings by Reynolds, Turner, Benjamin West and Gainsborough, and on sculpture by John Flaxman and Thomas Banks. Besides Britton the other contributing authors were John Adolphus, Edmund Aiken (on St Paul's Cathedral), James Linnell Bond (on Richard Westall's painting "The Expiation of Orestes"), John Mason Good, Prince Hoare (on Northcote's painting of the "Earl of Argyle in Prison"), Richard Hunt (on Flaxman's statue of "Resignation", a monumental group in marble by Joseph Nollekens and "The Sixth Angel" painted by Henry Howard), James Northcote (a memoir of Reynolds), Thomas Phillips RA (a memoir of George Romney) and Walter H. Watts (on Romney's "Titania"). The architectural frontispiece was designed by Joseph Michael Gandy and the drawings of St Paul's Cathedral were made by James Elmes. Soane is thanked in the preface. A prospectus for the work is also in the Soane Museum archives (q.v.).
