BRYDONE, Patrick (1743--1818)
A tour through Sicily and Malta. In a series of letters to William Beckford, Esq. of Somerly in Suffolk; from P. Brydone, F.R.S. In two volumes. A new edition. ...
London (Place), printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell,, 1775.
2 vols ; 21.1 cm. (8°)
i: xvi, 373, [1] p., fold. engr. map
ii: xi, [1], 355, [1] p.

First published in 1773. Brydone was tutor to William Beckford of Suffolk (not the writer and art collector). Brydone's tour was made from May through August 1770, at a time when Sicily was virtually unknown to British travellers and Soane may have used a copy of this guidebook on his own trip to Sicily in spring 1779 (see Darley, Soane, p. 44). ESTC n34285.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the half-titles to both volumes. The map in this copy is marked in red ink with a numbered itinerary from Messina to Taormina, Catania, Syracuse, Cape Passero and Malta, which does not appear to coincide with Soane's route during his grand tour.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-tooled spines with floral motif, red and green morocco spine-labels.

Reference Number 1804

Additional Names Beckford, William (d.$1799)
