The author was a traveller and writer who travelled in Egypt, Palestine and Persian between 1813 and 1818, established the Calcutta Journal in 1818, and was later expelled from India in 1823, and the newspaper suppressed, for his criticism of the East India Company and the Bengal government. The first part of his travels were published in 1821 as Travels in Palestine. The 'Appendix' relates the action for libel in the case of Buckingham vs Bankes on 19 October 1826. In May 1827 Buckingham presented Soane with a special copy of the 'Appendix' and wood-engraved plates (q.v.), bound by Soane with a copy of the Verbatim report of the libel action which may have been presented at the same time (1826, q.v.).

Binding C19th diced russia, gilt roll-tool borders, gilt double-rule spine, direct-lettered in gilt, marbled edges. Uniform with the special edition of the 'Appendix' only, 1827, the three volumes bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 15 s., 5 January 1830. (Archive 7/14/40, Book binding).
