[Travels In Mesopotamia. Appendix]
Travels in Mesopotamia. Including a journey from Aleppo to Bagdad, ... with researches on the ruins of Nineveh, Babylon, and other ancient cities. By J.S. Buckingham, ... In two volumes. [Appendix only.]
London (Place), Henry Colburn,, 1827.
xv, [5], 24, [1], 62--76, 16 p., [27] wd-engr. pl. ; 20.5cm. (8°)

An edition of the 'Appendix' only, with separate pagination, probably intended for distribution by the author to his friends and acquaintances. The traveller and antiquary William John Bankes, who had travelled with Buckingham in Jerusalem, Damascus and Aleppo, published an anonymous critical review in the Quarterly Review for January 1822, and later a letter, alleging that Buckingham's Travels in Palestine, 1821, had plagiarised drawings and observations from Bankes's own notebooks. The affair, related in the 'Appendix' to Travels in Mesopotamia, resulted in a libel trial and the award of £400 in damages to Buckingham in October 1826.

Copy Notes The present copy, inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper From the Author / to John Soane Esq / May. 1827 -, is bound up with the reprinted title-page, preface, list of contents and 'illustrations' of the Travels (the former reset), together with impressions of the wood-engraved plates, and a copy of the 'index', all apparently taken (or reprinted) from the main work for the benefit of recipients of the 'Appendix' who had no idea what all the fuss was about. Soane's copy has in addition a copy of the 'Opinions Of Reviewers On The Travels ...' (16 pp.) and the Verbatim report of the action for libel in the case of Buckingham versus Bankes, 1826 (q.v.).

Binding C19th diced russia, gilt roll-tool borders, gilt double-rule spine, direct-lettered in gilt, marbled edges. Uniform with the author's Travels in Mesopotamia, 2 vols, 1827 (q.v.), the three volumes bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 15s., 5 January 1830. (Archive 7/14/40, Book binding).

Reference Number 1808
