This is the fourth edition of volumes I and II (first published in 1715 and 1717 respectively) and the third of vol. III (not part of the work as originally planned, and first published in 1725). The previous edition was published the the letterpress title-page to vol. III dated 1731. The date of this reprint of the 1731 edition, with the letterpress reset and the title-plate to the first two volumes altered to read 'III' volumes instead of 'II', is uncertain, but may be connected with an advertisement in the General Advertiser, 14--17 January 1751, announcing publication of the three volumes, or with dates as late as 1759 or 1761; see note to BAL, Early printed books, no. 3544, pp. 2324--25. Copy Notes Copy 1: Uniformly bound as a set with John Woolfe and James Gandon's continuation, 1767--1771 (q.v.) forming volumes IV and V.
Copy 2: 57.5 cm. This is probably the set of 'Campbells Vitruvius 3. Large Paper' bought from Thomas Boone for 6 guineas on 5 February 1808. (Spiers Box).

Binding Copy 1: C18th tree calf, gilt-ruled borders, gilt-tooled spines with urn, paterae and peacock ornaments, marbled endpapers.
Copy 2: C18th or early C19th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt-ruled spines, red morocco spine-labels.
