In four books. First edition: Cremona, 1585. Pages 160--4 are skipped in the pagination; text is continous. The title and imprint as given above appear within an engraved allegorical dedication to Philip IV of Spain (p. [1]). The portraits of the dukes and duchesses of Milan in book IV were engraved by Agostino Carazzi of Bologna, whose engraved portrait of the author appears on p. [6] of the prelims. The map of the city of Cremona is dated 1583 and signed as etched by David de Laude. Book IV is present here with separate pagination and register, and a separate letterpress title-page reading 'Historia Delle Vite De' Dvchi, et Duchesse Di Milano, con i loro veri Ritratti cauati al Naturale. Compendiosamente Descritte Da Antonio Campo Cavagliero, Pittore, Et Architetto Cremonese. Che è in ordine Quarto Libro della sua Historia di Cremona.' This title-page, which is set within a frame of printer's flowers, bears the imprint 'In Milano, Per Filippo Ghisolfi. M. DC. XXXXII. Ad instanza di Gio: Battista Bidelli. Con Licenza De' Svperiori.' Copy Notes The Soane copy has Book IV, the 'Historia Delle Vite De' Dvchi, Et Dvchesse Di Milano' misbound to follow p. [8] of the prelims. This is probably the 'Historia di Cremona 4to' bought from Thomas Boone for 4s. 6d. on 24 November 1808. (Spiers Box). Front free-endpaper inscribed in pencil in Boone's hand Complete in 4 books x E x / the 4th. is placed at ye beginning. / with Portraits of Illustrious persons / & one of Queen Mary.; further inscribed in other hands in ink Dup(91) and in pencil 0.10.6 followed by a bookseller's cipher.
Binding C17th calf, double gilt-ruled borders, gilt-tooled spine with botanical motif, paper spine-label.
