CARLETTI, Giuseppe (fl. 1776--81)
Text: XCVI, [4] p. ; 31.2 cm. (4°)
Atlas: 61 engr. pl. (8 fold.) ; 60.1 x 70.9 cm. (1°)

Carletti's text relates to a large format atlas of 61 plates of mainly figurative subjects drawn by Franciszek Smugliewicz and architectural subjects by Vincenzo Brenna, engraved by Marco Carloni, which was issued subsequently in three annual instalments intended to appear in December 1776, 1777 and 1778. The work was commissioned by the publisher Ludovico Mirri, under whose name (or that of the artist Smugliewicz) it is sometimes catalogued. The text was available on its own with plates 2--4 (a view of the ruins and two plans) included, and Mirri's preface to the text is reproduced in pl. 1, suggesting the plates were also issued separately. Some of the folded plates have extensions pasted on at each end to complete the decorative frames. In the BAL copy, plates 25, 34, and 59 are unnumbered; in the Soane copy, these plates are in a numbered state, and pl. 20 is unnumbered. BAL, Early printed books, no. 557.
