The title is etched within a 'View of the remains of the Gateway and part of the west end of the Abbey, Westminster' (vol. I, pl. i); there are no separate title-plates or title-pages in vols II--VI. Volume I has plates dated as published in 'Jany. 1786', vol. II plates dated 'April 1t. 1786', vol. III 'Sepr. 1t 1787', vol.IV 'Jany. 1t 1789', vol. V 'Jany. 1t 1791', and vol. VI 'Jany. 1t 1793'. With tissue guards bound between the plates, probably as issued. BAL, Early printed books, no. 573; ESTC t90201.
Copy Notes Copy 1: Purchased from Maxwell, 12 January 1811. (Priv. Corr.XVI.E.2.9). Each volume of this copy has (as usual) a front free-endpaper bearing a pen-and-ink sketch of a shield (apparently drawn and inscribed by the author) containing details of the number of views in the volume, its price ('5s. 9d. half bound'), and Carter's current address at the time of sale, viz. No.2 College St. in vols I--III, and 2 Hamilton / Sq. Hyde Park / Corner in vols IV--VI. In this copy however the latter address has been inserted in correction of the former in vols I--III and then subsequently scored out in all volumes except the last.
Copy 2: The plates only of vol. I.
Binding Copy 1: C18th half sheep, marbled-paper boards, green morocco spine-labels.
Copy 2: Brown paper wrappers inscribed in ink (by author?) Views of Antient / Buildings in England Vol.1 / pub. by - Carter / 7 shi:[?] / 12 Upper Eaton St. Grosvenor Place.
