Tan Chet-Qua of Quang-Cheou-Fou = Sir William Chambers. First published in 1772, the Dissertation was intended as a disguised attack on the perceived monotony of the landscape gardening of Capability Brown, but it misfired with the public. Chambers was forced to publish a second edition in 1773, to which he annexed an 'Explanatory discourse' disguised as a the work of a Cantonese sculptor who had recently visited England. (See Harris and Savage pp. 156--7, 162--3.) The additional engraved title-plate and engraved dedication to George III are reprinted (or reissued) from the first edition. The 'Explanatory Discourse' has a divisional title-leaf; pagination and register are continuous. ESTC t1905; Harris and Savage 118; Henrey 548.
