Chambers, Sir William (1723--1796) - In verse
[Dissertation on oriental gardening. Explanatory discourse. French]
Discours servant d'explication, par Tan Chet-Qua de Quang-Cheou-Fou, gentilhomme; ... dans lequel les principes établis dans la dissertation précédente se trouvent éclaircis & appliqués à la pratique.
Londres (Place), chez G. Griffin; T. Davis; Wilson & Nicol, & P. Elmsley; & J. Walter,, 1773.
[2], 51, [1] p. ; 27.5 cm. (4°)

This translation of Chambers's reply to William Mason and other critics was clearly intended to be issued both in conjunction with unsold copies of the French version of the Dissertation (q.v.) and for sale separately to owners of the latter to bind up with their copies. It includes a two-page 'Avertissement du Traducteur', unique to this edition. The apparently intended third edition was never published. Harris and Savage 119; Henrey 551; ESTC t118496.

Copy Notes Copy 1: Bound (3) with the 2nd ed. in English of the Dissertation (q.v.) and its French translation. The present copy has two half-page proofs, tipped-in at pp. 30 and 31, of a translation into French of the original, presumably suppressed, version of the passage where "Tan Chet-Qua" recounts examples of his ill-treatment by the English mob; that on p. 30 includes a marginal note by Chambers in red ink identifying this version as the first reading / which in ye third edition / must be / substituted / in the places / of that which / now is printed.
Copy 2: Bound (9) in a collection of 9 pamphlets on the arts, and following another copy of the Dissertation in French.

Binding Copy 1: C18th mottled calf, gilt roll-tool borders and tooled spine with a motif of flowers and fruit-baskets, red morocco spine-label.
Copy 2: C18th quarter vellum, mottled-paper boards, green spine-label lettered 'Miscellanea Picturæ Et Sculpt. &c.'. Numbered '59' in a series of pamphlet volumes.

Reference Number 1876
