The present volume, printed as a royal commission, records Chambers's work for the Princess Dowager of Wales at Kew in the six years from his appointment as her architect, with obvious links to his previously published works on Chinese buildings (q.v.) and garden design (q.v.). Copy Notes Copy 1: With a 4-page publisher's catalogue of I. and J. Taylor, 56 High Holborn inserted at end (q.v.).
Copy 2: 53.6 cm. Imperfect; wanting the 8 plates of views at the end. Archival evidence suggests this copy may have been bought at Sir R. Jebb's sale on 8 September 1787 for 10s. 6d. (Journal 1, p. 175).
Binding Copy 1: Late C18th half calf, marbled-paper boards, red morocco spine-label.
Copy 2: C18th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-ruled spine lettered in ink 'Kew'. This is probably the copy bound for 6s., 23 November 1792. (Journal 2, p. 222).
