First published in 1759 (q.v.). A second volume on 'convenience, oeconomy, and strength' had been promised if the book was well received, but despite its highly favourable reception both in England and in Paris, no such volume was issued to accompany the first or second edition (1768, q.v.) and Chambers eventually incorporated some of the material as well as notes for some undelivered lectures at the Royal Academy into the present edition, regarded as "the most complete representation of his thoughts" (Harris and Savage, p. 157). Copy Notes Copy 1: Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper From the Author 1792. Pasted down on front free-endpaper is a printed prospectus for publishing in six parts a fourth edition with additions by Joseph Gwilt (q.v.), which appeared in 1825 (q.v.). With a few marginal pencil notes by Soane in the text.
Copy 2: 54.5 cm. Inscribed in ink on title-page J. Reynolds. Purchased at Christie's Revett sale, 26--27 June, 1804 (q.v.) for 12s., lot 77 with one of Soane's three copies of Chambers's Designs of Chinese buildings, 1757 (q.v.).

Binding Copy 1: Late C18th half sprinkled calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt roll-tooled spine with guilloche and Greek key, red and black spine-labels.
