First published in 1759 (q.v.). A second volume on 'convenience, oeconomy, and strength' had been promised if the book was well received, but despite its highly favourable reception both in England and in Paris, no such volume was issued to accompany the first or second edition (1768, q.v.) and Chambers eventually incorporated some of the material as well as notes for some undelivered lectures at the Royal Academy into the present edition, regarded as "the most complete representation of his thoughts" (Harris and Savage, p. 157).
