First published in 1775. Chandler, a classical scholar, was commissioned by the Society of Dilettanti to undertake a tour of exploration in Greece and Asia Minor, between 1764 and 1766. This was the first independent mission funded by the society and resulted in three publications: Ionian antiquities, 1769 (q.v.), the present work and Chandler's Travels in Greece, 1776 (q.v.). Page [284] advertises other works 'Lately Published, (Inscribed by the Society of Dilettanti to his Majesty)'. With a final leaf of errata. ESTC t63358.
