Chandler, a classical scholar, was commissioned by the Society of Dilettanti to undertake a tour of exploration in Greece and Asia Minor, between 1764 and 1766. Three publications resulted from this first independent mission funded by the society: Ionian antiquities, 1769 (q.v.), Chandler's Travels in Greece, 1775 (2nd ed. 1776, q.v.) and the present work. The final unnumbered preliminary leaf contains a list of errata on the recto and advertises other works 'Lately Published, (Inscribed by the Society of Dilettanti to his Majesty)' on the verso. Binding C18th diced russia, gilt roll-tooled pentaglyph and metope borders, gilt-ruled and dotted spine, gilt edges.
